According to my experience, which is in no way representive or official, there is one main distinction between contemporary forms of racism in the US and in Europe. In short, Americans make fun of Muslims the same way Europeans make fun of people of African origin. The saddest part is that both might comment on eachother's (lack of) openness and acceptance. No one wins.
